Easy Rider

Well, OK, so it's not quite a Harley. But today Juliet had her very first ride on a bike! Once we'd got over the initial hesitation of wearing a large purple and orange helmet, it was smiles all around. James took her up and down the street a few times, and I could hear a loud "Weeeeeee!" as they whizzed past. Hopefully we can squeeze in a few small-scale family outings before my belly gets too big for riding.

Ear infection... and Ham

Looks like we're back to the doctor again this afternoon with another ear infection. I'm going to ask for a referral to a specialist this time; I'm tired of the endless cycle of antibiotics.

In a more amusing anecdote, this morning we went to our local IGA supermarket to get a couple of things. We're there every couple of days, so all the checkout chicks know us. It's a VERY Italian supermarket, so lots of "Bella!" type stuff going on. Anyway, the lady at the deli decided to treat a very baffled Juliet to a rolled up slice of ham. Juliet had NO idea what to do with it, so brandished it in her fist, shouted and enthusiastically waved it at everyone we passed. All of whom looked more than a little alarmed and treated me to some very puzzled "you give your baby HAM?!" type glances.

The Littlest Golden

We had our 19 week scan today, and it was all good news. Being a paranoid pregnant woman, I was starting to worry that the baby isn't kicking much (although I do feel kind of rumbles). But all my fears were allayed today - the baby is doing very well, and the sonographer reaffirmed the estimated due date to be the 29/12. Fingers crossed s/he manages to avoid being born on Christmas Day or New Years Eve!

We got to see the baby in 3D this time which was pretty amazing. It's very skinny of course, but apparently they don't start building up fat til 24 weeks or so. Still, fascinating to see!

Bipedal Action is the Go

Yep, we are now proud parents of a walking toddler - finally! I do believe that the last lot of antibiotics for her ear infection made a difference, as her balance was not quite right while she was sick. This week she's been getting more and more adventurous with the walking, until a couple of days ago she walked right across the room. Now of course there's no stopping her. I'm not sure who's more proud - us or Juliet!

She's also decided to continue her "big girl" development this week by moving to a single middle of the day nap. And at daycare she's graduated to sleeping on a mat on the floor instead of a cot, and a little chair instead of a highchair. She's also taken to giving us LOTS of unexpected big kisses and cuddles. Very, very sweet.

Cutie!

Just had to post this photo I took of Juliet this afternoon when she was giving her toys a cuddle. A few minutes before I came and got her from her cot, I could hear her loudly kissing them all with a "Mwah!"

Health woes

Oh what a week it's been. Last Wednesday Juliet fell sick yet again, sleeping a mammoth 20 hours out of 24. By the time I was able to get her to the doctor on Friday morning, she was tired, sooky, feverish and the sickest I've ever seen her. Yep - ANOTHER ear infection, and to top it off, tonsillitis as well. We're now on ear infection alert, and if she continues to have more over the next 1-2 months, we're off to an ear/nose/throat specialist.

She's feeling much better now her antibiotics have kicked in, and has got over her "I'm not feeling well so I'm going to throw a 24 hour tantrum" phase too, thank God. We're back to being gorgeous and happy again. Yay! She's now taking a few steps at a time, but not yet walking properly. We did notice last week that her balance was affected by her ear problems, so that's probably not helping too much.

The shoe obsession continues, and "Doo-ee" is her version of "Juliet" - to be repeated approx. 400 times a day. Very cute!

As for me - well, I think I can sometimes feel the baby start to move. It's so faint though. It may just be all that chocolate gurgling around my tummy...

Hurricane Juliet strikes again

"Did you not want me in this cupboard?"

As you can see from the PJs and dressing gown, the destruction starts early in our house.

Blog Kickoff!

Yes, I’m a bit slow getting on the blog bandwagon. But after a few failed attempts at maintaining a personal website, I thought it might be easier to just go with the prepackaged deal. Hopefully this way I won’t be quite so slack about updating. This blog is going to be mostly about us and Juliet (and Juliet’s sibling after h/she arrives). Nothing that arty, nothing that intellectual; just family news to update anyone who may be interested.

So to get things started, I’ll begin with a snapshot of what’s going on right now. Juliet’s almost 14 months old, and has started taking her first tentative steps. It feels as though we are always desperately wanting her to reach her next milestone, but then immediately missing the “little” baby she once was! She is definitely a toddler these days rather than a baby. She’s got about 13-14 words, many of which only we can understand. Fave word is “shoes”, rhyming with “books”. Very cute, which is just as well as it’s repeated about 64 times a day. Her appetite is quite alarmingly large. This of course fills me with immense pride, as if it’s a personal achievement of mine. Ah, to be a mum!

Oh, and Bruce the Rooster is still her main man, as seen in the photo I took a few hours ago. She does love all her soft toys, but noone comes even close to Brooster.

I’m now 15 weeks pregnant, and in disbelief as to how quickly this pregnancy is flying by. I’m so distracted with Juliet that sometimes I almost forget I’m pregnant. The thought of having a newborn in 5 months time is something that I would rather be in denial about however (I've come to REALLY value my sleep!!), so the distraction is quite welcome.

So that’s about it for now – I will try and be at least semi-regular about posting on this site. And if I ever get REALLY motivated, I might even start a separate arty/intellectual blog with little or no talk of babies! Stranger things have happened…
